About this event

Sensationalism in the Media:  Jodi Arias on Trial

presented by

Monica K. Lindstrom, Esq.

The Jodi Arias trial in the Maricopa County Superior Court is being hailed as the the trial of the year across the country.  But high profile cases in the media are hardly new.  The trials of Casey Anthony, Scott Peterson, O.J. Simpson and others all fascinated the nation.  And good or bad, sensationalism is here to stay.

Ever wondered how a case like the Arias trial become one of the most watched and most discussed cases of our day?  What really goes on behind the cameras?  Monica Lindstrom, an attorney who comments on high profile cases nationally and locally, will address these questions and others, such as how the media gets in the courtroom, rules the “talking heads” have to follow, and ethical considerations that affect the commentators and players.  She will also explain the bizarre facts of the case and the tactics of the attorneys involved.  It is clear this trial will be used in law schools and trial practice classes across the country just like the first OJ Simpson trial.  Should she have testified? Should defendants ever talk to the media?  You need to be aware of the role the media plays in any trial, including yours, and how you might have to one day not only convince a jury but also the court of public opinion.

Monica K. Lindstrom is the principal in MKLindstrom Law, PLLC in Scottsdale and Of Counsel to the Merlin Law Group.  She has practiced law for over 14 years.  She started as a criminal prosecutor with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in Phoenix and has been a litigator in various areas including criminal defense, bankruptcy, administrative law, educational law, complex civil litigation, insurance, and civil law (with issues of real estate, landlord tenant, employment, discrimination, contract, and family). She has appeared as a legal commentator on Geraldo at Large, Jane Velez-Mitchell, Nancy Grace, Good Morning America, The O’Reilly Factor, Neil Cavuto’s Real World, Studio B, Tru TV/In Session and HLN and numerous other network programs. With her experience as a former prosecutor, Monica has shared her legal insight on the trials of Phil Spector, Warren Jeffs, O.J. Simpson, Dr. Conrad Murray (Michael Jackson trial), James Ray (Sweat Lodge case), and Casey Anthony. She has also commented on issues related to criminal law, insurance law, schools, students, discrimination, child abuse and Constitutional rights, to name a few. You can often see her on Fox 10 NewsAZTV Channel 7’s The Morning Scramble with Pat McMahon and AZFamily 3TV (Channel 3) in Phoenix, Arizona or hear her on KTAR.  You can read her comments on current cases in the media at her website, www.monicalindstrom.com and you can follow her @MonicaLindstrom.
